Incumbent Governor Sol Matugas of the Liberal Party won her third and last term as Governor of Surigao del Norte in the last May 9, 2016 Elections. Matugas bested former ally Rep. Guillermo Romarate of the Nacionalista Party. Aside from Governor Sol Matugas, three other Matugases won various positions of the province. Bingo Matugas won as Congressman in the First District beating Constantino Navarro III of the Nacionalista Party. Ernesto Matugas is also reelected as Mayor of Surigao City for his third and last term beating Rep. Romarate's wife, incumbent provincial Board Member Myrna Romarate. Ernesto Matugas Jr. also won as number 1 Councilor of Surigao City.
Not all is lost for the Romarates as Cristina Romarate Arcillas won as Board Member in the Second District and Richelle Romarate won as Mayor of Tubod town.
Other winners in Surigao del Norte include the comebacking Robert Ace Barbers who won as Congressman of the Second District, the seat held by Rep. Romarate for three terms. Barbers of the Nacionalista Party beat Lucille Sering of the Liberal Party. Also, former Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra also made a comeback winning the Vice Mayoralty post of Surigao City beating incumbent Vice Mayor Danilo C. Menor.
